Tony Bennett, the legendary New York crooner who sold more than 50 million records worldwide, has died at the age of 96.

The statement read, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Tony Bennett.” In the presence of his devoted family, he passed away quietly at home in New York City. Bennett was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Astoria, Queens, New York, on August 3, 1926. He began singing professionally in the early 1940s, and his career took off in the 1950s with hits like “Because of You,” “Rags to Riches,” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

Bennett was a master of the Great American Songbook, and his elegant and timeless vocals made him one of the most popular and respected singers of his generation. He won 19 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
