South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 102 runs in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

South Africa began their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign in style, beating Sri Lanka by 102 runs in a dominant performance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday.

South Africa batted first and posted a mammoth total of 428/5, thanks to brilliant centuries from Aiden Markram (154 off 72 balls), Quinton de Kock (118 off 106 balls), and Rassie van der Dussen (109 off 114 balls). Markram’s century was the fastest in the history of the Cricket World Cup, coming off just 49 balls.

Sri Lanka got off to a decent start in their chase, with Kusal Mendis (79 off 52 balls) and Pathum Nissanka (54 off 65 balls) putting on a 130-run partnership for the first wicket. However, once Mendis was dismissed, Sri Lanka collapsed in a heap, losing their remaining nine wickets for just 179 runs.

Tabraiz Shamsi (4/35) was the pick of the South African bowlers, while Kagiso Rabada (2/44) and Lungi Ngidi (2/53) also chipped in with important wickets.

South Africa’s batting masterclass

South Africa’s batting performance against Sri Lanka was one of the best in the history of the Cricket World Cup. Markram, de Kock, and van der Dussen all played scintillating innings to help South Africa post a total that was beyond Sri Lanka’s reach.

Markram’s century was particularly impressive, as he came out swinging from the first ball. He hit 16 boundaries and six sixes in his innings, and his strike rate of 216.67 was simply phenomenal.

De Kock and van der Dussen also played important innings, anchoring the South African innings in the middle overs. De Kock was particularly effective against the spinners, while van der Dussen was at his best against the pacers.

Sri Lanka’s disappointing batting performance

Sri Lanka’s batting performance against South Africa was a major disappointment. After getting off to a good start, they collapsed in a heap, losing their remaining nine wickets for just 179 runs.

Mendis and Nissanka played well for the first wicket, but once Mendis was dismissed, Sri Lanka’s batsmen seemed to lose their way. None of the other Sri Lankan batsmen were able to get going, and they were eventually bundled out for 326 in just 44.3 overs.

Conclusion

South Africa’s victory over Sri Lanka was a dominant performance. They outplayed Sri Lanka in all three departments of the game, and they will be looking to build on this momentum in their remaining matches.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be disappointed with their performance. They need to improve their batting if they want to challenge for the title in this year’s Cricket World Cup.
