July 4th 2024: What’s Open and Closed Across America

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, celebrates when America declared itself free from Britain in 1776. It wasn’t widely celebrated at first but became a big deal after the War of 1812. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1870.

Here’s what’s open and closed this July 4th:

Closed:

Government offices, post offices, courts, and schools.
Banks and the stock market.
Some FedEx and UPS services.

Open:

Most major retailers, with some having sales.
Airlines, with many people traveling for the long weekend.
Many Americans plan to travel, with about 70.9 million expected to go at least 50 miles from home from June 29 to July 7. That’s up from last year, with a lot of people driving and flying to their holiday destinations.
